Bruce not looking to change Catt style

Sunderland boss Steve Bruce believes Lee Cattermole is harshly treated at times and does not need to drastically alter the way he plays.[LNB] The Black Cats' new skipper collected his second red card of the season at former club Wigan on Saturday as his approach to the game caught up with him once again.[LNB]Cattermole has made his name with his robust style, and Bruce fears that, while he has contributed to his own downfall with a series of rash challenges, he has been harshly treated by some referees.[LNB]However, he knows his 22-year-old captain must learn when he can and when he cannot tackle.[LNB]Bruce explained: "Without that edge, Lee Cattermole is not going to be the player he is.[LNB]"Now, there's a difference between having a competitive edge to you and being reckless and silly.[LNB]"At the moment, maybe he is trying too hard. But he has made five tackles so far this season and he has had four cards. Two of them, I can say 'yes' to, but some of the other ones...[LNB]"There is a little bit of, not a witch-hunt, that's the wrong word, but every tackle he makes, he is being punished, so he has got to guard against that and come through it.[LNB]"There is many a competitive midfield player - and we can name loads of them - who learn from it and get on with the game."[LNB]Cattermole lasted just 22 minutes at the DW Stadium, and while his first booking might have been harsh, his second for upending Hugo Rodallega, was almost inevitable.[LNB]The former Middlesbrough midfielder will miss Saturday's Premier League clash with Arsenal and the Carling Cup visit of West Ham to the Stadium of Light three days later as his punishment.[LNB]For that reason, there is no immediate need for Bruce to address the issue, and he will do so after the weekend.[LNB]He said: "I haven't had any conversation with Lee over the last two or three days - there's no need to just yet.[LNB]"Always, when an incident happens like it did, there is always a bit of rawness.[LNB]"Nobody had to talk to Lee. You could see the utter disappointment on his face.[LNB]"He knew in the dressing room sitting there on his own that he had let his mates down, himself down and the club down. It's pretty simple.[LNB]"I didn't think he needed reminding. We will have a conversation early next week when the dust has settled a bit, and that conversation will remain between me and him."[LNB]Saturday's game will see Sunderland attempt to repeat their famous victory over the Gunners last season, when Darren Bent's 71st-minute strike was enough to claim all three points.[LNB]Arsene Wenger will arrive on Wearside on the back of his side's 6-0 Champions League demolition of Portuguese side Braga, and will go head-to-head with a manager who holds him in the highest esteem.[LNB]Bruce said: "I have got the utmost respect for these managers who have been there and done it and still have the same hunger and desire as when they walked into the job.[LNB]"Arsene Wenger came along as one of the first foreign managers in our country and everybody thought, 'He's that good, we will go and get one because they are all like him'.[LNB]"He has proved the point that they are not. I have got nothing but respect for him, the way he plays the game, the way he keeps finding players. He must put in hours and hours of research before he unearths the players he has.[LNB]"Considering the sums of money he spends compared to most, he does a remarkable job to keep getting Arsenal into the Champions League."
