Bruce in Cattermole admission

Sunderland boss Steve Bruce admits that he made a mistake in allowing Lee Cattermole to play last week. Cattermole, who has enjoyed a very good start to the season with his new club, has been nursing a heel problem. He returned to action last week, but he only lasted until half-time before being replaced. Bruce has held his hands up and confesses he should not have played the Teessider in the 5-2 win over Wolves. "I don't care who you are or what level you are at; if you miss two-and-a-half weeks because of injury and then try to play again in the Premier League after one day's training, it's going to be tough," said Bruce. "I made a mistake there and it was probably hard on Jordan Henderson leaving him out at the weekend after his performance in the cup against Birmingham. Gamble "Lee wanted to play - he always wants to play! I took a gamble, but I should have made the decision for him. "He had the injury in his heel, been in treatment and had an injection in it. "These things take their toll and I shouldn't have put him straight into the side." Despite coming off early against Wolves, Cattermole should be fit to face Manchester United this weekend, along with midfield colleague Lorik Cana. "Lorik got a knock on his ankle on Sunday, but he's fine," added Bruce. "Lee will train all week and we'll see a much better performance at Old Trafford. We expect him to be firing on all cylinders."
