Sunderland manager Steve Bruce is delighted after Jordan Henderson bagged his first goal for the club.
The 19-year-old midfielder scored the first of Sunderland's two goals as they beat Birmingham to progress to the fourth round of the Carling Cup.
"I think we've got a very, very good young player on our hands," Bruce told BBC Radio Newcastle.
"He's been knocking on the door, and it gave me the ideal opportunity to get him a game, and a goal."
"Jordan's had a fantastic pre-season," Bruce continued. "It's important he keeps his feet on the floor which he will do."
Bruce was especially pleased with the manner of the win at the Stadium of Light, and added that he is now even closer to knowing his strongest 11.
"I've got it in my mind," he said. "But it's going to take more than the six or seven weeks that I've been here to get the balance of the side right and get the team selection right.
"We're still learning all the time, and there are still a few players to ask a few questions, and I have to say Jordan's right up there with them because I love his all-round attributes."
