Bruce expresses confidence in strikers

Sunderland manager Steve Bruce is backing his strikers to fire the club into the upper reaches of the Barclays Premier League table. Darren Bent, Asamoah Gyan and Danny Welbeck all got themselves on the scoresheet at the weekend as the Black Cats bounced back from a costly blank day against Blackpool to beat Blackburn 3-0. Bent's strike took him to 10 for the season, while record signing Gyan has seven and Welbeck, on loan from Manchester United, five, and Bruce is confident the trio, who will aim to shoot down Aston Villa on Wednesday night, can keep the club in the top half of the table. He said: "You have to be able to score a goal. We know we are capable. The one against Blackpool was a fluke. "You give Bent, Gyan and Welbeck those chances again and they could all have scored a hat-trick against Blackpool. It wasn't their day. "But against Blackburn, we were very, very different. We were clinical in what we did and it was good to see the three strikers score goals."
