Bruce counting cost of defeat

Sunderland manager Steve Bruce bemoaned his bad luck after seeing three first-team players pick up injuries in Tuesday's Carling Cup defeat against West Ham. After Frederic Piquionne gave the visitors the lead at the Stadium of Light, Asamoah Gyan restored parity for the Black Cats. But Victor Obinna, on loan from Serie A champions Inter Milan, struck the winner in the second half to eliminate Sunderland. The defeat, as well as the injuries picked up by Anton Ferdinand, Keiran Richardson and Gyan, left Bruce frustrated. "It looks as if we have three centre-backs missing - Ferdinand, [Michael] Turner and [John] Mensah - for the weekend," he said. "The goal will do Gyan the world of good. The idea was to get some fitness work into him, but that has backfired too if he has picked up a hamstring injury too. But we don't think he is as bad as Richardson and Ferdinand."
