Bruce backs best of British

Sunderland boss Steve Bruce believes British managers are not being given the opportunities they deserve in the Premier League. Bruce claims that many clubs, particularly those established in the upper reaches of the table, are overlooking home-grown talent and favouring foreign appointments. And he feels that emerging managers may be discouraged from continuing on their chosen career path if they feel the route to the very summit is blocked. The former Manchester United defender has even suggested that Sir Alex Ferguson - who joined the Red Devils from Aberdeen over 20 years ago - would now not be considered for the Old Trafford post. Trend Bruce told the Sunday Mirror: "Most English managers must now bring a team into the Premier League to get a crack at the top flight. "If their way is continuously blocked - the big clubs we're talking about - then what's the point? What's the point of going into it if all you can be is in the lower divisions. "In that respect, it's changed from 20 years ago. The big one obviously is Fergie. Would he have got the United job from Aberdeen? I don't think so. "I hope the British ones are given a chance, people like David Moyes. Harry Redknapp defied the trend by getting the Spurs job. "I'm hoping that Sunderland's decision to appoint me keeps us going in that direction."
