Sunderland have beaten Monday's transfer deadline to sign Tottenham right-back Alan Hutton on loan.
The Scotland international has joined the Black Cats until the end of the season in a bid to play more first-team football.
Hutton's two years at White Hart Lane following his £9million signing from Rangers have been blighted by injury.
The 25-year-old full-back had started just one Premier League game for the north London club this season.
"We have been particularly short of defensive options of late so Alan will come in at a very opportune time and will provide us with vital reinforcements," manager Steve Bruce told his club's official website.
"We have tracked him for some time so we're delighted to have brought him here until the end of the season.
"I'm sure he will have a big part to play between now and May."
Earlier in the transfer window, Bruce bolstered his defensive options with the capture of centre-half Matthew Kilgallon from Sheffield United.
