Black Cats release Anderson
14 Jan 2010 - 15:43:58
Sunderland have released defender Russell Anderson following an injury-plagued three-year spell at the Stadium of Light.
Anderson, 31, made just one substitute appearance for the Black Cats following his arrival from Aberdeen in 2007.
The centre-half was loaned out to Plymouth Argyle and Burnley and also spent 14 months on the sidelines with a serious knee ligament injury.
The former Scotland international has recently been linked with a move back to the Scottish Premier League with Hibernian.
"This decision has been taken with Russell to give him an opportunity to find a club where he can fulfil his desire to play more first-team football," explained Sunderland manager Steve Bruce.
"He has been very unfortunate with injuries since he came here but his attitude and determination to get back playing have been exemplary.
"We wish him all the very best for the future."
