Sunderland boss Steve Bruce has abandoned his interest in signing free agent defender Lucas Neill.
The 31-year-old Australia international is available on a free transfer after leaving West Ham United when his contract expired in June.
Neill has also been linked with a move to Atletico Madrid, but he will definitely not be joining up with the Black Cats.
Reports claim the Wearside club have baulked at the wage demands of the former Blackburn Rovers full-back.
"We did speak to the player about the possibility of coming to Sunderland," Bruce told the Sunderland Echo.
"But as things stand, nothing's going to come of that and nothing will unless circumstances change."
