Black Cats lodge Turner appeal

Sunderland have launched an appeal against the red card referee Andre Marriner brandished at Michael Turner during Saturday's 4-3 defeat at Manchester City.

The former Hull City defender was dismissed after catching Gareth Barry in the face with an elbow in the closing stages of the seven-goal thriller.

After the match Black Cats boss Steve Bruce said the decision was "a joke" and the Football Association have now said they have received Sunderland's appeal.

Bruce is not a big fan of Marriner having complained about the referee following his display during Sunderland's recent clash with West Ham United.

"Because I have complained about him, I get that decision," said Bruce.

"I hope he can have a look at it and he can see it was a shuddering challenge between two of the most honest professionals you're going to get.

"Michael Turner got higher. That's the only reason he's caught Gareth Barry. You've got to raise your elbows when you're jumping for a ball. I might as well tell my centre-half not to head it next week because he might get sent off.

"I hope the referee looks at it again. I doubt it though."

A Regulatory Commission will hear Turner's claim on Tuesday.
