Veteran defender Sol Campbell is in talks with Sunderland over a possible move to Wearside.
Campbell, 35, is available on a free transfer after his short-term deal with Arsenal came to an end last month.
The former England international had spent the second half of last season back with the Gunners following a brief spell in League Two with Notts County.
Campbell was expected to join either Celtic of re-sign for the north London club after holding talks with both during recent weeks.
However, the Black Cats have now emerged as suitors, with reports claiming Campbell spent Thursday holding talks with club officials.
Sunderland are on the lookout for experience down the spine of their team after agreeing to sell club captain Lorik Cana to Galatasaray on Thursday.
