Sunderland supremo Niall Quinn is close to finalising a deal to sign Barcelona B midfielder Arnau Riera.
The 24-year-old has impressed during a two-week trial with the Black Cats and Quinn is confident he will put pen to paper on a three-year contract later this week.
"Riera is captain of Barcelona's B team and has impressed us greatly," the Irishman told the club's official website.
"He's a player I think Sunderland fans will love. His work-rate is phenomenal, he's got lovely touches and he brings something different to the party.
"We hope to sign him on a three-year contract on Wednesday. He's gone home to get himself organised and he'll be back. We can't see any last-minute problems.
"He has a medical to pass but by the way he has expended his energy in the last week or two here, he'll be fine on that."
However, Quinn has decided against signing Arsenal striker Anthony Stokes on a season-long loan after the 18-year-old failed to impress during a trial at the Stadium of Light.
