Sunderland are closing in on the signing of Titus Bramble from Wigan Athletic with the defender poised to undergo a medical in the north-east.
Manager Steve Bruce has returned to his former club to sign the 28-year-old centre-half for a fee in the region of £1.5million.
Bramble will undergo a medical in the UK before flying out to discuss personal terms with the Black Cats hierarchy at their pre-season training camp in Portugal.
The former England Under-21 international has been with the Latics for three seasons following a free transfer move from Newcastle United.
He made over 100 appearances for the Magpies but regularly found himself under fire following a string of high-profile mistakes.
Meanwhile, Bruce remains hopeful that another defensive target, Sol Campbell, will join the Black Cats on a free transfer when he returns from honeymoon.
