Bent savours debut goal

Darren Bent has expressed his delight after scoring a goal on his Sunderland debut against Bolton. Bent joined the Black Cats from Tottenham over the summer and was selected from the start alongside Kenwyne Jones at the Reebok Stadium. He headed home after just five minutes and Sunderland held on to clinch a 1-0 victory and three vital points. Bent admits it was a relief to open his account so quickly and he is now hoping to enjoy a prolific campaign. "I've had it drummed into me that the most important goal is the first one," he said. "When you've got the first one then hopefully the second and third aren't too far away. "People bang on about the statistics but I'm just delighted to find the back of the net and hopefully there will be many more for me." Fantastic Bolton pushed hard for an equaliser but Sunderland withstood an aerial bombardment and Bent has hailed the character of his team-mates. He said: "All week Steve Bruce had drummed it into us that it wouldn't be Bolton's football that would beat us, but them bullying us. "Anton (Ferdinand) and Danny Collins were fantastic and we really fought hard and competed. "That's what got us the victory."
