Bent's late penalty sinks City
29 Aug 2010 - 17:29:21
A last-gasp Darren Bent penalty helped Sunderland snatch a shock, if fully-deserved, 1-0 victory against big-spending Manchester City at the Stadium of Light.
Steve Bruce's side took their only real chance of the match while City failed to take theirs, including an astonishing Carlos Tevez miss.
Former Tottenham Hotspur and Charlton Athletic striker Bent hit a low penalty past Joe Hart four minutes into stoppage time after he had been pushed over by Micah Richards as the Black Cats responded in the perfect way to last weekend's disappointing defeat at West Brom to secure their first win of the season.
Bruce's side started brightly with Bent, Ahmed Elmohamady and Frazier Campbell going for goal in the opening ten minutes although they all failed to trouble Hart.
Tevez's amazing miss occurred in the 18th minute when Yaya Toure skipped past Lee Cattermole in midfield and played the ball in to the Argentine star. However, with Simon Mignolet nowhere and the goal gaping, Tevez contrived to spoon his shot over the bar from 12 yards.
Emmanuel Adebayor then saw a volley well saved by Mignolet before Tevez had a shot deflected wide after a fine jinking run.
Mignolet then saved the unmarked Toure's six-yard effort while, at the other end, substitute Danny Welbeck blazed a shot over the bar after being set up by Bent.
Togo international striker Adebayor was then denied by a superb Mignolet stop after he had been set up by James Milner and Richards until the deadlock was broken with virtually the mast move of the encounter.
After Elmohamady had whipped in a dangerous cross from the right, Richards was adjudged to have pushed Bent in the back as he leapt for the ball and the Sunderland striker slotted home the spot-kick himself although Hart almost managed to save it.
