Bent sets goals target

Sunderland striker Darren Bent is hoping to top the Premier League scoring charts at the end of the season. Bent has been on fire for the Black Cats so far this term and has found the back of the net seven times in eight games - just one strike behind leading scorer Fernando Torres. The 25-year-old is enjoying his new lease of life on Wearside, forming a potent partnership with fellow striker Kenwyne Jones, and wants to fire his team to success this season. "I don't set myself any goal targets but if I can be up there with him come the end of the season I'll be delighted," he said in the Daily Star. "I was the top-scoring Englishman in the Premier League three years ago with Charlton. I scored 18 goals that season and I'd love to do that again. "I'm just trying to score as many goals as I can. If we can finish in a European spot and I can score a lot of goals, that will be a good season. "It's been a long time since I've played so many games in a row and I always knew if I got a run of games I'd score goals. "It's showing now and if I keep going the way I've started the season I'll have as good a chance as anyone of being right up there." Bent will be pushed all the way by Liverpool's Torres if he is going to come out top of the pile, but he is happy to be named in the same bracket as the Spaniard. "Torres is one of the best strikers in the world," he added. "He's brilliant. When he's playing at his best he's unstoppable."
