Sunderland top scorer Darren Bent is in line for a surprise appearance at Wigan on Saturday.
The £10million record signing was expected to be out for three weeks after injuring his hamstring in last week's 1-0 over Arsenal.
But Sunderland boss Steve Bruce revealed the former Spurs striker has trained this week and he has not been ruled out of playing on his return to Wigan. Bruce is hoping the injury is not a tear.
He said: 'He has been in the gym all week and trained with us today and if there are no repercussions he could be involved at Wigan.
'That would be fantastic news for this club. Seeing him out there has given everyone a lift.'
