Bardsley sure of survival

Phil Bardsley is confident that if Sunderland reproduce the performance while down to 10 men at Manchester City they will escape relegation. Black Cats full-back George McCartney harshly received a straight red card for tugging at City ace Shaun Wright-Phillips' shirt as he ran through on goal. The Northern Ireland international was the last man but the ball seemed certain to reach Sunderland goalkeeper Marton Fulop before the winger could control it. Despite their numerical disadvantage, Sunderland lost to just a solitary Micah Richards goal and even had their hosts on the ropes late on as they pushed for an equaliser. "We were disappointed to come out with nothing," Bardsley told the Sunderland Echo. "George's red card was a massive blow and it was pretty obvious nothing was going for us. "We were disappointed by a lot of decisions and it looked to me that Marton virtually had the ball in his arms when there was a bit of contact on Shaun Wright-Phillips. "I don't know if the club will appeal against the red card but it's another test for us. We're up for the fight. "We all know what each other is about and we will go all the way for each other and the club. "If we play like we did yesterday then I'm sure we won't have a problem. There's pressure on everyone but more for the clubs below us. "They need to get more points than us and the games are running out. If we take care of things at home and pick up a point or two away, which I believe we can, then we will be fine." The result at Eastlands meant that it was just one win in seven for Ricky Sbragia's men and kept them just three points outside the bottom three. But if the club can repeat their gutsy performance against City for their remaining Premier League matches then the 23-year-old is sure they can stay up. "The lads dug in and we'll need that attitude every game for the rest of the season," he highlighted.
