All the best reaction to Gus Poyet's sacking as Sunderland manager

It’s hard to imagine many managers surviving a 4-0 loss to Aston Villa, and Sunderland boss Gus Poyet duly paid for that result with his job today.

The Uruguayan was given the old “thanks for his endeavours” by chairman Ellis Short, bringing to an end an eventful 17 months in charge which included last season’s great escape, a trip to Wembley in the Capital One Cup final and that 8-0 loss against Southampton.

Some Sunderland fans were disappointed to see him go.

Many thought that, despite a well of affection for Poyet, it was the right move.

But there was a definite desire for the club to address wider issues.

There was some suggestion that Poyet himself might not be too disappointed about it.

And who can blame him with ferocious fan protests like this one?

And of course, there was rampant speculation about who might succeed him.

And then there was chat about the most famous dodgy knees in football…

As for Poyet, he can reflect he’s gone the same way as many before him.

At least his exit had a modicum of dignity about it this time…
