Signed to Sunderland's youth academy at the age of 16, Henderson took just two years to break into the first team picture.
His senior debut arrived in difficult circumstances as he came on as a substitute in a 5-0 away loss to Chelsea in November 2008.
After a few more appearances, including a first start against Blackburn in the Carling Cup, Henderson was sent on a month loan loan to Championship side Coventry City in January 2009.
A series of good performances saw his loan extended until the end of the season, where he eventually finished with four goals in 15 appearances.
The young midfielder returned to Sunderland over the summer and immediately began pushing for a spot in the starting XI.
The 2009-10 season turned out to be a breakthrough one for Henderson as he established himself on the right of midfield, sometimes playing centrally during the absence of Lee Cattermole.
His impressive displays saw him rewarded with a new five-year contract and also the club's Young Player of the Year award.
Henderson has continued to play an integral role in Steve Bruce's side this season, even being linked with Premier League giants Manchester United.
On the international stage Henderson has represented England at U19, U20 and U21 level. He recently played a key role in the U21's European Championship play-off victory over Romania.
