Stuttgart sign Mexico defender Maza

Published: 15 Jul 2011 - 11:00:06

Mexican international centre-back Maza has left PSV Eindhoven to join Stuttgart, the German club's sporting director Fredi Bobic announced on Friday.

Bobic said the 29-year-old had signed a three-year contract, but the transfer fee was not divulged.

Maza, whose full name is Francisco Javier Rodriguez Pinedo, had been at Eindhoven since 2008, having previously played for Mexican club side Guadalajara.

"Given the absence of Matthieu Delpierre through injury, we wanted to have an extra option to play in this position," said Bobic.

"With Maza, we've succeeded in signing an experienced defender."

Stuttgart were reportedly encouraged to sign Maza by his countryman Pavel Pardo, who played for the Bundesliga outfit for three years until 2009.

"Stuttgart are a big club," said Maza. "For me, the transfer from Eindhoven to Stuttgart represents a new sporting challenge."
