Niedermeier given Gross backing

Stuttgart coach Christian Gross is standing by Georg Niedermeier despite the defender's troubled start to the new season.

The 24-year-old centre-half has been singled out for criticism following opening Bundesliga defeats at the hands of Borussia Dortmund and Mainz.

However, Gross has dismissed suggestions that Niedermeier should be axed ahead of Saturday's encounter with Freiburg.

"The sun does not shine every day," said the Swiss. "I am convinced that his security will return."

The Mercedes-Benz Arena outfit finished sixth last season and qualified for the Europa League where they Slovan Bratislava in the qualifying round.
