Japanese defender Sakai extends Stuttgart deal

Japan international defender Gotoku Sakai has extended his contract with Stuttgart until 2016, the Bundesliga club announced on Thursday.

The 21-year-old wingback signed with the 2007 champions last year after being spotted played for Albirex Niigata and has scored once in 22 appearances this season after initially impressing on loan.

Sakai who was born in New York to a Japanese father and German mother is one of the rising stars from Asia and made his international debut last September against the United Arab Emirates after taking part at the London Olympics.

Stuttgart are currently ninth in the German top flight and 17 points behind leaders Bayern Munich while they have reached the quarter-finals of the German Cup and knockout phase of the Europa League where they face Belgian club Genk.
