Whelan waits on scan results

Stoke City hope Glenn Whelan recovers from injury in time to face West Ham United on Saturday.

Whelan limped out of the Republic of Ireland's 2-2 draw against Italy on Saturday with a calf injury and is awaiting the results of a scan before learning whether he is fit enough to face the Hammers.

"We don't know if it's a slight strain or a pull," said the 26-year-old midfielder. "We've had it scanned and the results will tell us more.

"But personally, I'd like to think I'm in with a chance on Saturday.

"The physio doesn't think it's too bad and I hope to join in training after resting for the last few days."
