Whelan targets Potters starts

Stoke City midfielder Glenn Whelan is determined to stay at the Britannia Stadium and fight for a regular first-team spot.

The 24-year-old Republic of Ireland schemer has not started a league game since the opening day of the season, but insists that he is not going to leave the club in the near future.

Whelan told The Sentinel: "As long as I am wanted here, I will stay and give it my all.

"If the manager says you are not in his plans then you have to look elsewhere, but at the moment the manager has told me I am in his plans.

"I am here and working hard trying to get back into the team. Going out on loan is not something I have been looking at.

"I believe in my own ability, it is just getting the chance to go out and put it into match mode, but we have a lot of decent players in this squad.

"Everyone is waiting for the chance to show the manager what they can do and it is going to be tough if you do get there, because there are other boys biting at the bit to take your spot."
