Whelan offered Reid backing

Republic of Ireland midfielder Steven Reid has questioned why international colleague Glenn Whelan has been left out of the Stoke City first-team in recent weeks.

Whelan impressed in his country's 2-1 win over Georgia at the weekend, having had to settle for a place on the bench for City's last two Premier League games.

Reid said: "I am enjoying playing alongside Glenn, he has been brilliant.

"It's really surprising he has not played the last couple of games at club level for Stoke.

"He is great technically, a great passer of the ball and he can put his foot in as well and I have been really impressed with him in the last couple of games he's played for Ireland.

"He also chipped in with a goal on Saturday, which we are all delighted about."

Whelan only joined Stoke in January, having forged his reputation during more than three years at Sheffield Wednesday.
