Sonko issues rallying call
18 Sep 2008 - 12:42:47
Stoke City defender Ibrahima Sonko has called on his team-mates to believe in themselves ahead of Saturday's trip to Liverpool.
The Potters make the daunting trip to Anfield at the weekend, but in Sonko and striker Dave Kitson in their ranks have two players who were on the winning side for former club Reading against the Reds last season.
"It will be easy to get motivated," he told The Sentinel.
"But you need to control your emotions when you get there and make sure you are effective and not just excited.
"We have to go there with self belief. They are bigger players, so we won't be over-confident, but we have to be confident enough to say 'I am going to trouble them today'.
"I am sure we can do something."
Meanwhile, Sonko believes the never-say-day spirit of Tony Pulis' side which was in evidence during last weekend's 3-2 defeat to Everton will stand them in good stead this season.
The Potters bounced back for falling two goals behind to push their more illustrious opponents all the way last Sunday.
"We never lay down. We conceded two goals, but we kept going," he added.
"We have a lot to do this season, but I honestly and strongly believe we won't get relegated.
"If we can cut out some small things here and there then I'm sure we will be strong enough to stay in this league."
