Stoke City manager Tony Pulis has admitted his bid to sign David Nugent on loan from Portsmouth has ended in failure.
Pulis had hoped to lure the out-of-favour England striker to the Britannia Stadium on loan until the end of the season to boost his side's automatic promotion hopes.
But the former Bury and Preston North End forward now seems certain to remain at Fratton Park following his return from hernia surgery.
"We've tried for Nugent all last week but I think Pompey want to keep him and so that's that," admitted Pulis after Saturday's goalless draw with Watford.
The hard-fought point took the Potters back to the top of the Championship table on goal difference from Bristol City.
"It was always going to be tough at the end of a three-game week," continued Pulis. "We looked so nervous second half as if one mistake could cost us."
