Potters land keeper Begovic

Stoke City have landed goalkeeper Asmir Begovic from Premier League rivals Portsmouth.

The Potters, who were involved in a protracted but ultimately fruitless deal to sign Begovic's team-mate David James earlier in the transfer window, have paid £3.25million for the Bosnia international.

The 22-year-old has signed a four-and-a-half year contract at the Britannia Stadium.

"Asmir is someone we have been tracking for some time and we believe that potentially he is the best young keeper in the country," manager Tony Pulis told the club's official website.

Begovic had seen his stock rise since after returning to Portsmouth from a loan spell in the Championship with Ipswich Town in November.

He made 11 appearances for Pompey while deputising for the injured James and regularly took the plaudits for his performances in a struggling side.
