Eustace eyes City stay

Midfielder John Eustace is close to putting pen to paper on a new contract with Stoke City, despite interest in his services from other clubs.

The 27-year-old has endured a torrid time with injuries since joining the Potters in the summer of 2003, but is now back to full fitness and looking forward to making his mark with the Championship club.

He told The Sentinel: "We have put an offer to the club and negotiations are ongoing. I don't think we are too far apart.

"I want to stay, otherwise I wouldn't have waited all this time. I haven't spoken to anyone else about contracts. There has been interest, but I want to play for Stoke.

"I want to enjoy my football again. I have worked hard on my fitness and things can only get better having had a good year last season when I didn't miss a day's training.

"Two-and-a-half years out of the game is a long time when you are then trying to get your fitness back.

"But I have now had 12 months of injury-free football and am looking forward to pre-season and taking it on from there."
