Etherington says sorry for red

Stoke City winger Matthew Etherington has admitted he was stupid to get sent off in last weekend's defeat at Sunderland. The former West Ham United star is suspended for the Potters' next three matches after kicking out at Danny Collins in an off-the-ball incident at the Stadium of Light. Etherington told The Sentinel: "It was stupid and I'm gutted because I was just getting match-fit - and I think my performances were getting better and better. "I laid the ball off to Henri (Camara) and went to get it inside when the player tugged me back. What I did was just a natural reaction and I don't know where it came from. "I didn't feel it was best to apologise to the other lads straight after the game because it was a bit too close to things and feelings were still running high, but I've apologised since. "It probably was a sending off, but I've seen a lot worse. I've seen (Cristiano) Ronaldo kick out against us at Stoke and against Michael Dawson at Tottenham and he didn't even get booked. "If I was a top player playing for a big-four club like a (Steven) Gerrard or a Ronaldo, he wouldn't have sent me off. But with that ref (Styles), you know you haven't got much of a chance."
