Coates talks up Etherington

Stoke City chairman Peter Coates has confirmed that his club may reward winger Matthew Etherington with a new contract for his fine form.

The 28-year-old joined the Potters just over a year ago and has impressed on the pitch, as well as making progress in his bid to beat a well-publicised gambling addiction.

Etherington's current deal runs until the summer of 2012, with Coates hinting at imminent talks over fresh terms.

He told The Sentinel: "I've gone on record to say what a nice man he is, but the main concern here is his contribution to Stoke City as a footballer.

"On that score, I'm sure I am not the only one impressed by what I have seen, particularly in recent times.

"His attitude and performance has been there for everyone to see.

"I know the manager values him greatly and I have also said England could do a lot worse than to take a serious look at Matthew."
