Glenn Whelan started his career at Manchester United and made only one appearance in the UEFA Cup against Total Network Solutions. He joined Bury in the 2003/04 season on loan and made 13 appearances for them. At the 2003 FIFA World Youth Championship Whelan represented Republic of Ireland Under-20 team.
