World Cup dream for Whelan

Stoke midfielder Glenn Whelan has set his sights on winning a place at the World Cup finals with Ireland after resolving his club future. The 25-year-old signed a new four-year deal with the Potters this week and now wants to maintain his form through the season to South Africa 2010. First, however, the Republic of Ireland must qualify and face vital games against Montenegro and Italy next month. Whelan told the club's website: "It would be a dream come true for myself if I could play in a tournament like the World Cup. "It is a big enough honour just to play for Ireland so if I got the chance to represent them in a World Cup it would be absolutely unbelievable. "Historically we don't qualify for many tournaments, so if I could play a part in helping us reach one it would mean everything to me."
