Stoke City captain Ryan Shawcross has committed himself to the club by agreeing a new five-and-a-half-year contract, the Premier League side revealed on Thursday.

Shawcross, 25, joined Stoke from formative club Manchester United in January 2008 and has since emerged as one of the most uncompromising central defenders in the English top flight.

"It's fantastic for us as a football club. We're really, really pleased to have him," said Stoke manager Tony Pulis.

"He's been the bedrock of what we've been trying to do over the past five or six years and we're really pleased that he's finally agreed."
