Stoke City have confirmed that central defender Ryan Shawcross is close to signing a new long-term contract at the Britannia Stadium.

The 22-year-old England Under-21s international has impressed during his two seasons with the Potters, scoring 12 goals in 88 appearances for Tony Pulis' side.

That has sparked talk of interest from a number of bigger clubs, including Shawcross' previous employers, Manchester United.

However, manager Pulis told the club's official website: "I have had long discussions with Ryan about a new contract and I am delighted that he sees his future here.

"There has been a lot of speculation surrounding Ryan, but we have made it quite clear that he is going nowhere and we are delighted to be in a position now where we can secure his future.

"He is an exceptionally talented young lad who has an important part to play at this Football Club, so I am confident that he will be a major influence upon what we are aiming to achieve."
