Season Review 2010/11: Nantwich Town

A look at how another one of our local non leagues sides fared this season                                        Nantwich had another disappointing season as, even though they managed to hand onto prolific non-league striker Micky Lennon, they had to settle for a lower mid table finish. A strong pre-season programme saw them claim just one victory, against Witton Albion, but fall to some heavy defeats against Port Vale, Crewe, Wrexham, Kidsgrove and Chester. That form was carried into the season as the Dabbers lost their opening three games and sat bottom of the table before a 2-1 victory over Northwich Vics got them off the mark. Good home form continued with an FA cup win over Burscough, a Cheshire Cup win over Stalybridge Celtic and a 5-3 epic league victory over Kendal Town but the away form was in stark contrast with a 6-6 draw at Mickleover Sports, where Town netted three times in the last 6 minutes, was the first point earnt away from home, at the sixth attempt. The first away win of the season at the end of October started a series of six successive wins in all competitions to raise real hope of a promotion charge going into the new year but the club were dumped out of three cup competitions in six days in mid December to dent the clubs cash flow. The side never truly recovered and eight consecutive defeats through February and March ended any hopes of a promotion charge, with the club nervously looking over their shoulders at the relegation zone as the season drew to a close, despite Lennon hitting the 30 goal mark. That run of defeats also saw managers Kevin Street and Darren Tinson removed and replaced by Jimmy Glass in the managers hotseat. The club was hit by an horrific run of injuries throughout the season, remarkably losing an average of two players per game during the first half of the season! Around the New Year time the Dabbers were unable to field a fit XI and Stoke jumped to aid the local non-leaguers by sending Academy scholars Alex Hedley, Zak Foster and Cameron Mitchell to Nantwich to cover the injury crisis.
