Season Review 2010/11: Kidsgrove Athletic/Congleton Town

A look at how this pair of local sides got on this season                                  Kidsgrove may have grabbed some silverware but will be disappointed that the seasons aim of promotion wasn't achieved again. Kidsgrove started the campaign well and lost just one of their opening nine league games, but were knocked out of the FA Trophy at the first hurdle and FA Cup at the 3rd qualifying round. 'Grove continued to stay in touch at the top and had some epic games along the way including a 7-2 win, four 4-0 victories, a 5-3 win aswell as a 5-2 defeat and a pair of 3-3 draws. Athletic's form started to falter after Christmas but there was still some stand out wins including 6-1 and 5-1 wins in the space of four days. Dave Walker netted 40 goals through the season, including the winner in the Staffs Senior Cup final, and bagged 4 goals in one game aswell as two further hat tricks. That Staffs Senior Cup final ended 1-0 against Stoke and followed victories over Stafford Rangers, Newcastle Town and Stone Dominoes in the earlier rounds, all without conceding a goal. The season run in started with Athletic inside the play offs but just one win in the last seven games, and one point in the last four, saw 'Grove plummet down to finish outside the top 5 in 7th position. Town started the season on fire, winning their first five league games, whilst also won their opening FA Cup tie 8-0 away at Daisy Hill. After they first tasted league defeat they started to drop away from the leagues summit, losing four games in a row. Congleton continued to keep themselves in and around the play off zone, showing form that was consistently inconsistent. A run of victories could well have pushed them high into the top 5 but they were unable to do just that and ended the season outside the play off zone. The season finale though was the final of the Mid-Cheshire Senior Cup but, after a topsy turvy 3-3 draw with Northwich Vics, Congleton went down 5-3 in the resulting penalty shoot out.
