Pulis prepares new boys for hard yards

Stoke manager Tony Pulis has warned his deadline-day signings they cannot afford to rest on their laurels at the Britannia Stadium. The Potters were one of the busier Barclays Premier League clubs on Tuesday, clinching permanent deals for former Barcelona and Chelsea forward Eidur Gudjohnsen and Portsmouth utility player Marc Wilson. They also brought in Real Zaragoza's ex-Liverpool winger Jermaine Pennant on loan and re-signed midfielder Salif Diao on a two-year deal. Pulis has already told Gudjohnsen and Diao they will be undergoing a "mini pre-season" while many of the squad are away with their countries. And he has issued a general warning to the newcomers that they will have to work hard to earn a place in the starting line-up. "If they work as hard as the rest of the players do, with that little bit of extra quality they have, you hope it will make us a better team," said Pulis. "Over the next 12 days Eidur will do a mini pre-season with Salif and hopefully be ready for Aston Villa (on September 13). He is a fantastic player and will add that bit of extra quality we want."
