Pulis planning to play Owen

Tony Pulis insists he has not taken Michael Owen to Stoke to sit him on the bench and use the former England striker as an impact substitute. Owen's Potters switch was approved by the Premier League on Wednesday, allowing him to form part of Pulis' plans heading forward.

Stoke have snapped up the 32-year-old as a free agent following his release by Manchester United at the end of last season. Injuries have prevented Owen from playing as many games as he would have liked in the last few years, but he is a proven goalscorer at the highest level when fully fit. That is why Pulis has brought the ex-Liverpool and Real Madrid forward on board, with it his opinion that a man who has been capped 89 times by his country still has it in him to trouble top flight defences.

He said: "Michael's got the bit between his teeth and wants to play. "He's more than just an impact sub. We want Michael to get himself fit, in the team and playing regularly again. "We'll assess his fitness levels over the next three days and take it from there. "It's important we see what level he's at before we push him. "We're delighted with the deal we've got and feel it's well worth taking a chance with a player like Michael for all sorts of reasons. "We believe, once he's match-fit, that he'll prove he can still score goals in the Premier League. "People say he played only one Premier League game last season but he was available for a lot more United games but wasn't selected."
