Newcastle United 2 Stoke City 1: match report
Papiss Demba Cisse scored an injury-time winner against Stoke City to give a
frustrating afternoon the happiest of conclusions for Newcastle United.
Cisse timed his run perfectly and was found by a superb pass from substitute
Sylvan Marveaux. The Senegal international controlled it and then smashed it
past the isolated Asmir Begovic for his ninth goal of the campaign.
It was hard for Stoke to take, particularly a defence which had limited their
hosts to long range shots for most of the match, but that seems to be
manager Tony Pulis’ luck at the moment.
Newcastle appeared to be edging closer to taking a first-half lead, a series
of shots whistling wide of the target as they took pot-shots at Begovic’s
goal.
The Stoke goalkeeper, though, did not have to save any of them as his defence
formed a wall in front of him that prevented the Magpies threading balls
through to striker lone striker Cisse.
