But Nani had a torrid time at the Britannia Stadium and was subbed off early in the second half after enduring chants from the home support of 'You'll never be Ronaldo'. To make matters worse, his replacement, Ryan Giggs, inspired United to a 2-0 victory.

Top form: Cristiano Ronaldo has made a great start to his career at the Bernabeu
Nani said: 'Cristiano and I talk a lot. We speak about my own game and he gives me confidence to go out and perform.'
And Ronaldo backed his young friend to become the star United hoped he would be when they shelled out around £17m to Sporting Lisbon in 2007. He said: 'Nani is an excellent player and I am sure that in a few years he will be among the best players in the world.'
