Williams woe for County

Stockport County captain Ashley Williams could be sidelined until Christmas after rupturing a medial ligament in Saturday's home defeat to Peterborough United.

Hatters boss Jim Gannon is facing a possible defensive crisis as Williams' likely replacement, Dominic Blizzard, also limped out of the game.

"It's come at a cruel time for Ashley with a potential international call-up (for Wales) beckoning in a few weeks," Gannon told the Manchester Evening News.

Of his side's 2-1 defeat to Posh, Gannon added: "I had high hopes for the game, but they soon went cold when I saw the way certain players performed.

"But what can I do? Once they step over that line, I have no influence on them. We need players with courage and confidence to play and defend well, but some of them were found wanting.

"I suppose the overriding feeling is that I'm fairly sad and depressed about some of the things that have gone on."
