    Hatters hold on to Williams

    01 Feb 2007 - 14:41:41

Stockport County boss Jim Gannon has confirmed that the League Two play-off hopefuls turned down a six-figure bid from a Championship club for Ashley Williams on deadline day.

The 22-year-old has attracted interest from a number of clubs due to his performances for the Hatters, but has opted to stay put for now.

Gannon told the club's official website: "It was a reasonable offer for a League Two centre-half, but we turned it down because Ashley is too important to our plans.

"We're not interested in the money, but in line with our current open and honest policy of keeping players informed, we spoke to Ashley and explained the situation.

"He knows this club is ambitious and after speaking to his agent and his family, I think he wants to stay with us.

"Well before we knew of this interest in Ashley, we had agreed in principle on a one-year extension to his current deal, which still has one-and-a-half years to run."
