Stockport County striker Matty McNeil won the backing of manager Jim Gannon after his goalscoring performance in the 1-1 draw with Grimsby Town.
McNeil gave the Hatters the lead on the stroke of half-time at Blundell Park, but the Mariners hit back soon after to earn a point.
Gannon told the Manchester Evening News: "Matty's such a platform for other people to play off and I can't believe the other players didn't get around him much more than they did.
"I'm delighted for him that he scored. He does everything that we want him to do and he does it well.
"Respect to Adam Proudlock for his goals, but with Anthony Elding and Matty McNeil there's a combination there that could work."
Meanwhile, Blackburn Rovers goalkeeper Zak Jones was among the County squad at Blundell Park at the weekend, having joined on a month's loan from the Premier League club.
