Stockport County boss Jim Gannon may make a move into the loan market after discovering that midfielder Carl Baker has been ruled out of Saturday's trip to Letyton Orient.
The former Morecambe player injured his ankle in training and will be out for two weeks.
Gannon said: "The squad needs to be strengthened, even if it just means bolstering it over the next few weeks to cover the possibility of further injuries.
"I'm taking stock, but I'm also conscious that, as the overseer of all football matters, I'll have to be prudent and wise with club finances.
"We'll have a good look at the loan situation, but I will only bring in players if it is absolutely necessary.
"We've been tracking a number of players for a while and keeping in touch with other managers, and this is a time of year when players do become available.
"But again, we will only invest money into new players if it's necessary."
