Gannon bemoans cup exit

Stockport County boss Jim Gannon felt his side were unlucky to see their FA Cup run halted by lower league opposition.

The Hatters lost their second-round replay 2-1 to Gillingham at Edgeley Park on Tuesday evening and missed out on a money-spinning tie with Aston Villa in January.

"I thought they were the better team on the night," claimed Gannon.

"They showed great desire and played really well. They were ruthless in exploiting severe weaknesses in our team.

"I have got great faith in our players, but unfortunately they are going through a difficult period.

"I am disappointed for them that they will not be playing against a good side in Aston Villa, but they will get their opportunity at some stage."
