Better news for Williams

Stockport County manager Jim Gannon has breathed a sigh of relief after it was confirmed that Ashley Williams' ligament injury is not as bad as was initially feared.

It had been thought that the club captain would not play again until Christmas after suffering the injury in Saturday's 2-1 defeat to Peterborough United.

But a brief statement on the club's official website said: "The result of Ashley Williams' MRI scan has revealed a ruptured collateral medial ligament that will keep him out of action for around six weeks.

"Fears the defender may have torn his anterior cruciate ligament have proved unfounded and the skipper could be back in action ahead of the busy Christmas period."
