Ablett handed County reins

Stockport County have named the former Liverpool defender Gary Ablett as their new manager.

The 43-year-old, who made more than 100 first-team appearances for the Reds before going on to play for Everton and Birmingham City, had been working as Liverpool's reserve team manager until leaving the post in May.

Jim Melrose, part of the consortium that is poised to complete the takeover of the club, told County's official website: "After a lengthy process, I'm delighted to announce the appointment of Gary Ablett as the new manager of Stockport County.

"Gary has a fantastic pedigree, having enjoyed a career at the very highest level and he has a big reputation for the quality of his coaching at Liverpool and Everton over the last few years.

"Above all Gary impressed us with his approach to coaching and improving players, his man-management skills and his ambition.

"This appointment should underline our ambition and I'm sure it will be welcomed by the players, whose attitude since returning for pre-season training has been absolutely superb."
