Ward sickened by sucker punch

Stockport boss Peter Ward was delighted with his team's performance, if not the result, as his side held league leaders Chesterfield to a 1-1 draw. Paul Turnbull handed the Hatters a surprise lead in the 72nd minute but Deane Smalley headed the Spireites level less than two minutes later to give each team a share of the spoils. Ward said: "I thought we were good in both halves. I'm very pleased with the performance, but not with the result. "When you go one-up against the league leaders at home, you expect to shut up shop and be able see the game out but, once again, we've been done with a sucker punch - we were still celebrating when they've equalised. It's something that we need to work on. "They're very well organised and have got some really good players with quality all over the team, but we stood up to the challenge today and I was very pleased with some of our performances. "We really had a right go at them and we frightened them a bit. It was a chance to get our first victory of the new year and that's disappointing but I was impressed with the input from the lads."
